Stories Every Day - The Rise of Story Memberships

8/29/2019

Picture
To do what I want to do and to write what I like to write it's becoming apparent that I'll have to defy the norms of an industry.

Everybody understands the concept of a book. Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it. Sometimes you even write a review and recommend it to friends.

But my stories aren't always "main stream".

I've been relying on Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and others to help put my books out for readers to buy and that's a totally cool thing. I'll continue to write stories and put them up to these sites until they kick me off. But what if I could offer my fans something more?

What if, you could mention to your favorite author (like me) that you'd love to see more of this character or even suggest what could happen in the story─and then the author actually takes your advice and creates a scene especially for you?

Sounds too good to be true to have your own story teller write for you?

Well, as I've mentioned to my VIR's (Very Important Readers Group), I'm thinking of starting a subscription service where I write an episode or scene every day and post it for fans.

Well, with Wattpad, Radish, and a whole host of other providers, I could. But I still don't trust them. It would be the same story, different provider all over again.

No, this time, I want to build a site where readers can go to and have a new thing everyday. Not a plethora of slog to go through to *see* if you like it, but something you know you'll love.

There's a time and place to discover new authors. But sometimes, I just want a place to go where my favorite authors are writing their stories. In this day and age, I can do something about my ideal concept.

IN fact, I've started the process.

I write everyday and am perfecting the way I do things so that when it comes time to launch my story membership there will be something to read.

Which is also why I'm thinking of bringing the free stories down.

So, as they say, smoke 'em if you got 'em.

That's the just with me. Tell me what you think in the comments!

Until next week...

Happy reading!

8/22/2019

Picture
I've been known to download artwork for personal use─only when given permission or when I see something on a stock site, of course─and put it up as a screensaver or on as my phone background, so I thought maybe you might like something like that too!

So I've configured a few screen savers for you! Take a look...

We have the realistic images...

Then I have the artwork commissioned by Cynthia Hlady. Please know that I PAID for these and I am releasing them for personal use only.

Now, I'm betting that you like at least one of these and want to download and put it up on your computer or possibly your phone. So I have nifty instructions that tells you how to do that whether your on your desktop, mac, android, IOS system, or webrowser (including Chrome).

Enjoy!

Putting an image on your computer or phone background

If you're on a desktop computer, most the time you just have to right click on the image, scroll and click on the "set as desktop image" selection and you're done! (P.S. This method doesn't work on chrome)

Otherwise... download the image then follow these instructions:

WikiHow has instructions with pictures!!

Go here: www.wikihow.com/Make-Any-Picture-Your-Computer%27s-Wallpaper

Otherwise, here is the run down for Desktop, Mac, Android, iOS and setting background images from your internet browser (except chrome for some reason).

DESKTOP:
  1. Right-click your desktop and select “Personalize”. This option is at the bottom of the context menu that appears and will take you to the “Personalization” menu. Some sample images will be displayed under the “Choose your picture” header.
  2. For simplified, on-the-fly wallpaper changes, simply right-click a photo on your computer and select “Set as desktop background” from the context menu. This lacks some of the customization options of the Personalization menu.
  3. Click “Browse” to select a photo. You will be prompted to browse the folder on your computer to select an image file.
  4. Click to select a photo and press “Choose Picture”. The photo will be set as your wallpaper and appear in the “Choose your picture” image list.
  5. Select an option from the “Choose your fit” dropdown. This option is useful for images that are smaller or larger than your desktop resolution.
  6. ”Fill” will adjust the image so that there is no blank space around the image.
  7. ”Fit” will adjust the image so that no part of it is cropped out.
  8. ”Tile” will fill all space with repeated copies of the image. This option is best for smaller images.
  9. ”Center” will use the exact size of the image.
  10. Select “Slideshow” from the “Background” dropdown to setup a wallpaper rotation (optional). Once this option is selected you can add pictures to the slideshow by clicking “Browse” and set a rotation interval from the “Change picture every” dropdown.
  11. Press the “X” in the upper right corner to close the window. This finalizes your decision once you have settled on a wallpaper choice and optional settings. The settings are auto-saved as you select them.

ANDROID:
  1. Open the "settings" app.
  2. Tap “Display”. This is listed under the “Device” header and will open a list of options specific to your screen.
  3. Tap “Wallpaper”. This will open a list of places from your phone to select wallpapers.
  4. Options here may vary depending on the model of phone or tablet you are using.
  5. Tap “Photos”. This will open a list of ALL photos on your device, including those located in the Photos app, Downloads, or other third-party apps.
  6. Tap a picture to preview it as a wallpaper.
  7. You can reach this same interface by launching the “Photos” app, tapping a photo to view, opening the options menu (in the upper right), tapping “Use As”, and selecting “Wallpaper”.
  8. Tap and drag the picture to adjust its positioning. You can also pinch or reverse pinch to zoom in and out.
  9. Tap “Set Wallpaper” at the top of the picture. This will set the picture with your selected positioning as your wallpaper.
  10. Tap the back button instead if you decide you do not want the previewed picture as your wallpaper.
  11. Tap “Set Wallpaper” at the top of the picture. This will set the picture with your selected positioning as your wallpaper.

Using iOS Display Settings:
  1. Open the "Settings" app.
  2. Tap "Wallpaper". This button is listed in the sidebar on the left and will open the wallpaper options.
  3. Tap “Choose a New Wallpaper”. You will be taken to the ‘Choose’ page where you can select between Apple wallpapers and pictures stored in your Photos app.
  4. Tap a picture to preview it as a wallpaper.
  5. You can reach this same interface by launching the “Photos” app, tapping a photo to view, opening the “Share” menu in the upper right, and tapping “Use as Wallpaper”.
  6. Tap and drag the picture to adjust its positioning. You can also pinch or reverse pinch to zoom in and out.
  7. Choose your wallpaper settings. The bottom bar lists a number of options on how to use your photo as your wallpaper. Tapping the first 3 will set your photo as a wallpaper.
  8. “Set Lock Screen”: This option will set the photo as your wallpaper only when the device is locked.
  9. “Set Home Screen”: This option will set the photo as your wallpaper only when your device is unlocked at the home screen.
  10. ”Set Both”. This option will set the photo as you wallpaper on both your lock and home screen.
  11. ”Perspective Zoom On/Off”. When on, this will automatically adjust your photo to fit the screen so that the photo scrolls slightly as you tilt your device.
  12. ”Cancel”: This will return you to your previous location without setting the wallpaper.

MAC:
  1. Open the Apple Menu and select “System Preferences”. The Apple Menu is in the left corner of the top menu bar.
  2. Click “Desktop & Screensaver”. This will open the wallpaper and screensaver controls. By default you can choose from Apple sample wallpapers and your pictures folder. [1]
  3. For simplified, on-the-fly wallpaper changes, simply Ctrl + click a photo on your computer and select “Set as desktop background” from the context menu. This lacks some of the customization options of the Display Settings.
  4. Tap the “+” button to add pictures from another location. This button is in the lower right corner of the window and will prompt you to browse your computer for image locations.
  5. Click a picture to set it as your wallpaper. The picture will be set as your wallpaper and can be viewed in the background. You can change the background as many times as you like by selecting other pictures in the browsing window.
  6. Select the “Change picture” checkbox to setup a wallpaper rotation (optional). Once this box is checked, you can select a time interval to decide how often the wallpaper will change from the menu to the right.
  7. This option will use all of the pictures in whichever folder is selected when selecting the checkbox.
  8. Press the “X” in the upper left corner to close the window. This finalizes your decision once you have settled on a wallpaper choice and optional settings. The settings are auto-saved as you select them.

Using images from a web browser:
  1. Choose your browser. Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari[2] can set a desktop image directly from the browser window. On Chrome, images must be downloaded to the hard drive and set as a background image from there.
  2. Images can not be set as wallpapers directly from mobile browsers.
  3. Search for images. It is a good idea to include image size or resolution as part of your search parameters. With Google Image Search this can be done by selecting “Search Tools” under the the search bar and choosing an option from the “Size” dropdown menu.
  4. Click to view an image preview. You can also view the full size image by clicking the “View Image” button next to the preview.
  5. Right-click the image (or Ctrl + click on Mac}} and select “Set as desktop background”. The image will be set as your wallpaper without a preview.
  6. This method will set an image to fill the screen by default.
  7. Right-click the image and select “Save As…” (optional). Select a location on your computer and save to access the image with the wallpaper tools. This options is for Google Chrome users or those who want more control over how the image is used as a wallpaper.
  8. Use the method that corresponds to your platform to use the downloaded image as your wallpaper.

Two For Tea

An (Off-the-Rails) Ice Era Chronicle

C.M.Moore

Blurb

She’s hunted by the government. They’re banished for brawling. Can three hearts in exile beat as one?

Ice Era, Year 45. Teagan wishes she still had the strength to break free of her chains. After her little sister disappears and her gang of outlaws betrays her, she endures superpower-draining torture before her date of execution. But when a twist of fate transports her from her jail cell to the care of twin outcasts, she’ll stop at nothing to escape their safe haven. Even if it means breaking her own heart.

Duke and Baron never learned to put aside their differences… or their fists. Banished to fight out the rest of their lives in a remote outpost, the twins’ world is turned upside-down when a feisty young woman with a price on her head arrives at their doorstep. For the first time, the brothers finally agree on something: they’ll do anything to win her love. Even if it means they have to share.

Will the trio ever find their happy ending or will old rivalries and deadly enemies deal their love a fatal blow?

Two for Tea is the third Off-the-Rails companion book to the Ice Era Chronicles dystopian romance series. If you like dark apocalyptic settings, gripping action, and complex romantic relationships, then you’ll love C. M. Moore's thrilling novel.

Inside Scoop

This is an "off-the-rails" story which means this novel veers off the main story line to connect with minor characters Duke and Baron, who we saw in 2:05 a.m. and Raiden Out the Storm.

Here's the low down I give everyone (if you don't already know):

If you look at C.M.Moore's books in chronological order, They look like this so far as of 2019:
  • 1:05 A.M.
  • Griding My Gears
  • 2:05 A.M.
  • Raiden Out the Storm
  • Two for Tea
That's five books and some look like they don't belong in the Ice Era Chronicles if you go by book covers. But here's the thing...

If the thought of menage, same sex relationships and other out of the normal types of love stories like that spook you─stay with the numbers:
1:05 A.M.
2:05 A.M.
3:05 A.M.
4:05 A.M.
5:05 A.M.
etc. You get the point.

Going with the main books means you won't miss a lot from a plot point of view. New characters will be introduced and you'll be able to pick up right along with the rest of the crowd.

But if you are interested in following all the characters and believe love is love no matter the sex, or if you're into menage of all types, or think relationships are what they are, or if these things don't bother you, then read both the numbers and the "Off-the-Rails" Ice Era Chronicles. Basically, you would read them all in order of book number.

1:05 A.M. (book 1)
Grinding My Gears (book 1.5)
2:05 A.M. (book 2)
Raiden out the Storm (book 2.15)
Two for Tea (book 2.5)

If this still doesn't make sense, send Connor & Monica an email. They can explain!

My Review

Picture
These were simple characters dealing with complex matters. Baron and Duke are both typical males dealing with a screwed up situation. There are few women like Tea and found her to be a pinnacle of patience with these two numskulls. Yet, I can't blame those dorks for being dork men.

Here are some reviews I found really fitting:

★★★★ Full of great one-liners and LOL moments...
Two for Tea is another entertaining installment in this series by C.M. Moore.

I went into this story assuming I didn't like Teagan because of the character impression I had of her in the previous book, (bad girl, member of The Originals) however, she's had to endure some horrible things at the hands of the HSPC and her character growth in this release was perfect. And then there's Baron and Duke...seriously, could these twins be any hotter? They are witty without trying too hard and they are the epitome of siblings! The three of them together, priceless...there are so many laugh-out-loud moments.

If you're not reading this series, you are missing out on some seriously entertaining reading. Hurry and catch up, there's so much more to come and you won't be disappointed.

★★★★ What happens when the ONE for you...is actually TWO
I originally received an ARC of this book but I liked it so much I immediately had to buy it.

I've read most of the other stories in this world C.M. Moore has created and I think they're fantastic. Fantasy, post-apocalyptic, romance, sometimes action and death, it covers a lot of genres.

Tea has been beaten down by the world they live in. Duke and Baron have had their own hard knocks but at least they have each other. And when Tea shows up, literally on their doorstep, they all have someone new to hold onto. It just takes a little time for them to realize it.

I can't wait for what comes next.

★★★★ A perfect match of messed up characters
The controversial interpersonal interactions kept my head in this book until the early hours of the morning. This story simply couldn't happen to anyone else. Each characters flaws, and backstories weave the story and their lives together. The inner turmoil they overcome connects the human condition to this futuristic world. The balance of good and drama in their lives keeps the story moving without the action-pact pace in the other Ice Era Chronicles. It was great to catch all the cameos from characters in his other works. I really appreciate the un-Disney like ending, so much more fitting to the series.

★★★★ New to me author
This is the first story I have read by this author but it won't be the last. The story has an interesting take on the dystopian world that I found very enjoyable. I loved the complexity of the characters and the relationship between Tea, Duke, and Baron.

★★★★ Another great book in the series.
As with the other books in C. M. Moore's series, Ice Era Chronicle's, this one does not let you down. It's a speed read for sure.

★★★★ A love story with a twist.
I really liked Two for Tea. This Author does a great job exploring different types of relationships. They keep you on your toes until the very end wondering what will happen to Tea. It’s a love story with a twist and that’s what keeps it interesting and makes you not want to put it down.

*Chapter 3*

Tea thought death would be more… comfortable.

The throbbing ache in her ass brought her to consciousness. Was this Hell? She’d left a woman on the tracks to die. Plus, she’d failed her sister, and her grandma called her the spawn of Satan. She could totally be in Hell. Hell was supposed to be fire and brimstone. Goosebumps rose on her skin. Her guess, not eternal damnation. Her grandma would be disappointed. The old bat was probably waiting for her in the seventh ring.

Tea pried her eyes open. Flickering lights flashed above her. She wasn’t dead. Take that, God. Her vision blurred, and she blinked over and over. Her eyeballs felt like the inside of a sandbox. Grimy blurred holes came into view. She was in an animal cage with patterned holes the size of a pencil drilled into the top. Light winked through the tiny voids. The cage shuddered. She was moving. Pressing her body close to the side, she peeked out one of the small gaps. Damn it, if only the holes were a little bigger. Finally, the world came into view.

A water base hallway zipped past her line of sight. The rumble of wheels on cement clattered against unforgiving stone.

Paintings hung from the walls. Birds, trees, rivers all in warm greens and cool blues. Whatever water base this was, it didn’t matter. The only important item here was, could she escape? The idea of bolting flickered in Tea’s brain. She leaned away from the side of the crate.

Adorned only in white underwear and a matching stretchy cotton top equivalent of a lightweight bra, how far could she go? She would freeze to death before she reached a door. Escape was a big if. Her hands were free, but she still didn’t have her strength. No matter. Tea was still a dumb animal. Fitting she was in a cage.

Rubbing the scar on her neck, Tea considered Mother’s commands. They never helped. Besides, she was on her own. She would do whatever it took to not return to her captivity within the H.S.P.C. If that meant fighting, fine. If it meant running, fine. Whichever. Just because no one ordered her around didn’t mean she was a complete dummy.

Tea scowled at her surroundings. Bring it on. Tea was a survivor. For the first time, she had no one else calling the shots. She could do this. She had to do this.

The cart stopped, and the inertia settled. A knock echoed in the quiet hall. Tea held her breath and wished for a way to be free. Wishing never got her anywhere. Praying wasn’t worth her time. As a child, she’d learned never to want what she couldn’t have.

“Yes?”

“Delivery.”

“Is it bedframes?”

The next words were muffled. Tea heard other mumbles and then the cart began to roll. Once more, she pressed her body against the plastic side.

Her eyes focused on the shambles of a water base apartment. The half-destroyed rectangular room was painted in tan and green. Broken and splintered bookshelves overflowed with a mix of books, wires, and tools. Batteries and strange gadgets littered the torn carpet around the fractured shelves. A hole was punched in the wall.

The box jarred, and she rolled on her back. Tea adjusted herself to line up with a new hole. This gap was cleaner than the last spot.

After her eyes went back to the ruined couch in front of the wrecked bookcase, she tipped her head as she swiped at a cobweb tickling her cheek. Near the exit, a man with brown skin much like hers leaned on the cracked door frame. He held a clipboard and a file. His dark eyes appeared uninterested as he ran his fingers through the short black curls sticking up on his head. A blue unlit glass pipe dangled from his lips.

“I need you to sign.” The man with the black hair waved the clipboard. The pipe made a clack against his teeth.

“What is it?” a deep voice rumbled.

Tea heard the other voice, but she couldn’t see who spoke. Movement caught her eye. Beyond the couch and the bookshelf was a cracked marble counter that opened into an L-shaped kitchen. She angled again. The mystery speaker finally came into view.

The man who came around the counter was a tall blond with massive hulking muscles. His shirt clung to his body like an overzealous girlfriend. When Tea saw him, her heart sank to her stomach. The blond strolled with flowing grace that didn’t seem to fit his beefy form. As he came toward the messenger, he tugged on the bottom of his torn gray shirt over his pale-peach skin. His vibrant light blue eyes flipped from her container to the nametag clipped to the courier’s shirt. Tea noted the word “Essie” was poorly handwritten.

“Here’s the file. There’s the package. Sign.”

“I want to read that before I make a decision.” The huge sexy blond reached for the paperwork. Golden locks fell in his eyes. He pushed the strands back into place with the back of his hand. Even with gifted strength, Tea wasn’t sure she could scrap with a guy that big. Weak as she was, her brain didn’t offer her a lot of alternatives for a daring escape.

“Name?” The messenger looked down at his clipboard.

“Duke.” The blond flipped a red ball in his hand. Tea realized he played with a yo-yo. Harvesters had those. The toy dropped through his fingers and popped back up on its string. The blond tossed the plaything down two more times while he waited.

“I’ve the name Duke Baron.” The messenger handed Duke the file. “Sign here.”

“I’m Duke. Baron’s my younger brother.”

“Younger by one minute. That doesn’t count, bro.” A second man entered the room. He chewed on a brown hunk of meat as he strolled. Tea had a sense of déjà vu. The man walked with the same casual grace. Every one of his muscles rippled under his crumpled gray shirt. He had the same hair and eyes. Twins. Absolutely identical. Tea blinked a couple of times just to be sure. Yes, even the same sexiness hung around this new addition to the room. Tea might want to run away, but hot was hot.

“It counts,” the older twin said. “Probably.”

“Says who?” The other twin came to a halt next to his brother and then punched him in the arm. The strike was the type of hit that would’ve brought down a smaller man. Ouch. These two would crush her. Her heart pounded.

“Says me.” They bickered then punched each other again. Knock it off. They would have bruises tomorrow.

Side by side, Tea could now see a few differences. Baron’s hair was a darker yellow. His locks had deep gold streaks. Duke’s eyes danced with more of an ocean blue. Other than these small variances, they appeared to be the same in every way, right down to the fact that they both wore gray shirts and khaki pants.

“I’m Baron.” Baron frowned at the man in the doorway. “What’s in the old box?”

Tea sized them up. Looking for weaknessess, she considered what she could use as a weapon. Luna’s words played in her head: forgiveness, love, peace. What was Tea supposed to do? She was on her own, but damn it, she didn’t have a clue.

“Where’s Joe?” Duke said more to the name tag. His huge hands flipped through the papers in the file, but he didn’t appear to be reading.

“Yeah, where’s Joe?” Baron stared at the clipboard over the messenger’s shoulder. “Wait, I did order this.”

“No me gustan favores,” the runner muttered and the pipe in his mouth clacked again. “I don’t know where Joe is.” He sighed. “Can you sign? I have to go.” He handed the clipboard to Baron and then lit his pipe. A curl of smoke floated in the air.

Tea bit her lip and cringed. She prayed that they weren’t talking about Snow-Everyone-Joe. What was the chance that they referred to the same agent who had captured her?

“We’re not signing.” Duke glared at Baron and then at Essie. “We like to deal with Joe.”

“I’ll sign.” Baron waved the clipboard back and forth through the growing smoke cloud. “I ordered this.” The messenger handed him a ballpoint.

C.M. Moore was raised with a combination of military and Catholic values. He didn’t do a lot of writing as a kid. He did, however, master the art of sarcastic guilt trips.

After grumbling and whining his way through the “hardest” part of his life (high school), he joined the Army. The grumbling and whining stopped immediately. Uncle Sam was not accepting of those antics, and instead, the military nurtured his core values and solidified the sarcastic traits. He also had to write reports, which were not allowed to be sarcastic.

Connor served his country on three separate tours. His first tour was like a six-month spring break in England. Easy duties requiring minor brain synopsis; his kind of work. His following tour to Iraq tested his metal, and proved to his wife, who had previously served overseas, that he could survive it too. His third and final tour to Afghanistan rocked his world. In Afghanistan, Connor was tasked to a Route Clearance Platoon, where he cleared routes of roadside bombs. The job was pure boredom interjected with moments of sheer terror. Connor is attributed with five finds, and nine strikes to his vehicle over a one year period. He finished his tour and came home with several new medals upon his chest. A Purple Heart being one of them.

Connor has several injuries which limit his mobility and his career options. He has a Traumatic Brain Injury and other physical issues. He now volunteers with veteran organizations and helps with a small bookstore his wife and he built. After Connor had returned to civilian life, he took a few writing courses which inspired him to put pen to paper. He’s not sure why that metaphor is still in use when everything is done on the computer. Connor believes it should be, give your fingers hours of cramped exhaustion.

Years of watching his wife devour romances caused him to want to write a book she would want to read. With the support of family and friends, Connor began writing his first book with his wife, Monica. There were many, many copies that ended up under his bed until now.

The final draft of his romance 1:05 a.m. follows an assassin trying to get out of the game, and a base security officer who is looking for the same peace of mind. This book is a sexy love story in a world covered in ice and snow. His home in Minnesota gives him plenty of inspiration.

When Connor can step away from his finger exercise on the keyboard. He is a stay at home husband and father. He helps his two daughters with their homework (yet he distinctly remembers graduating from homework) and aids his wife with their bookstore. He also enjoys hunting and fishing near his home in central Minnesota, and his hobbies are building projects and growing a white trashy beard.

Dangerous Gamble

An Elite Dangerous FanFic
S.N.McKibben
© 2015 S.N.McKibben

“If it isn’t the Jackpot Winner himself.” Dalton, the barkeep at the Star and Garter, had become my number-one fan for some reason. After seeing me meet with Felix a few times, Dalton treated me with more esteem.

“Why do you always call me that?”

“Because…” he shrugged. “It’s true, right?”

Dalton poured my favorite. Potts-dim liquor still quenched my palate even after I’d tried several more expensive types of alcohol. At least now I knew how the top-shelf drinks tasted. Before, I’d never had enough money to indulge in such trivialities.

“So, you do know anything about my patron?” I asked.

Dalton eyed me in warning. “It’s best not to go poking around a patron’s business.”

“I know something about Felix,” a voice from behind me said.

I turned around and saw a cloaked man. His hood covered his face, exposing only his nose, lips and days-old beard scruff.

“Oh?” I said.

“For a price,” the drifter elaborated.

Of course.
“How much?”

“I want to hear it.” A blond, blue-eyed jock plopped down a credit stick. I recognized the voice. The blond could only be Aurellio. Mr. Sunshine looked every part of the quintessential rich kid. He wore the best pilot suit money could buy. Toting a dashing velvet red cape—much like Felix’s, Aurellio looked, sounded and smelled like money. Only, I knew his patron chucked him overboard like rotten meat. That must have been a devastating blow. For a guy like him, born with a silver spoon up his ass, coming down to the Federation hell-hole was actually a little dangerous. I never worried for Felix. The old man seemed to know how to handle himself. But Aurellio might get jumped. I’d have to tell him to tone it down a bit around here or risk getting mugged.

Aurellio sat next to the hooded drifter, slid the credit stick towards the man and crossed his arms over the table.

The hooded stranger stared at the credit stick Aurellio had put on the table. The drifter took a sip of his drink, grabbed the credit stick and inserted it into a scanner. From the lack of haggling, I figured he was impressed with the amount offered. Not good. I looked around to see who might notice Aurellio throwing around his credits. Shit this guy was clueless. Money around here brought out the smell of people’s desperation.

“I was here when Felix was talking to the resident CEO.” The stranger’s nose turned to me. “You might know her,” he smirked. Great. For there being no one around during my merciless firing, it seemed everybody knew about my abasement at the hands of Ourora Kingsley.

“It seems you two were just play pieces,” the drifter said.

“Harbinger,” Dalton growled.

The hooded man flipped off the bartender. “As I recall, you won a great deal on the bet.”

“And this is your way of compensating yourself for losing?” Dalton said.

“Bet?” Aurellio scowled. “What bet?”

Harbinger took a sip of his drink. “Don’t you know your ex-patron, Golden One?”

“What were the terms?” I asked.

“You two can’t work that out?” Harbinger stood up.

“Hey, that’s it?” Aurellio lifted his palms as if to say what gives?

Harbinger shrugged. “That’s all I’m allowed to say.” He turned his face to Dalton.

Aurellio strutted over next to me at the bar, eyes glaring at Dalton. “What do you know?”

I watched Harbinger slink out of the bar and fade into the shadows.

“Just like he said, boys,” Dalton said.

“You bet in my favor and he didn’t?” I turned to the barkeep. “Thanks!”

Dalton smiled.

“Does that mean I get free drinks?” I grinned.

“No.”

Worth a try.
“So it involved Felix becoming my patron. Was that why I was fired?”

“That old biddy would’ve fired you anyway.” Dalton cleaned a glass with his white rag. “That’s just who she is.”

“Come on,” I said. “Tell me why you won if you’re not going to share in the profits.”

“I won because you won.” Dalton ran the rag over the counter.

“All I’m doing is making a living,” I said.

“Precisely.” Dalton folded the rag and tossed it under the bar.

“So Felix bet on him and Ourora bet on me?” Aurellio pointed a thumb at himself.

“Not exactly,” Dalton said.

I threw up my hands. “Will you just say it?”

The barkeep rolled his eyes. “Think of it in terms of Federation versus Imperials. It’s the same morals that govern the two factions.”

Aurellio’s forehead hit the bar top.

“Are you all right?” I said.

“I know.” Aurellio rolled his face toward me without lifting his head off the bar. “It was based on our success.”

“Explain,” I said.

Mr. Sunshine lifted himself up off the counter. “Here’s how it would go. Felix would pull me out of my ship, stop being my sponsor, and dump me in some backwater Federation hellhole, knowing I’d get back to Imperial space. Not only that, I’d get up and running again. You can’t stop a Crown.”

“Okay.” I lifted my eyebrows. A little full of ourselves, aren’t we? But it did sound like he’d been shoved into a situation much like mine before I met Felix.

“But you, a space rat, given the opportunities I had, would succeed.”

“So you’re saying he bet on us both achieving our goals? You’d get back what was taken from you and I’d find a better life?”

“Damn it!” Aurellio pounded on the bar top. “And we won him the bet.”

“You reap what you sow,” I quoted.

“Imperials believe you can achieve anything if you’re given a chance and set your mind to it,” Dalton said.

“While the Federation believes no one can do anything without government intervention,” I continued. That belief was all too well implied in everything they did. Screw that.

“What was the bounty?” Aurellio asked.

Dalton pulled a decanter from under the bar. “Care for some Bast snake gin?”

The Rook Review

8/1/2019

Blurb

When a woman wakes up surrounded by dead bodies with her memory erased, she must uncover her mysterious past to learn the truth.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a premise should be. Short, intriguing and just enough information to pique your interest.

Now, here's the blurb from the book:

Myfanwy Thomas awakens in a London park surrounded by dead bodies. With her memory gone, she must trust the instructions left by her former in order to survive. She quickly learns that she is a Rook, a high-level operative in a secret agency that protects the world from supernatural threats. But there is a mole inside the organization, and this person wants her dead.

Battling to save herself, Myfanwy will encounter a person with four bodies, a woman who can enter her dreams, children transformed into deadly fighters, and terrifyingly vast conspiracy.

Suspenseful and hilarious, THE ROOK is an outrageously imaginative thriller for readers who like their espionage with a dollop of purple slime.

Welcome to The Checquy. Won't you come in.
Here's my low-down:

Myfanwy (as in Mif-anny, rhymes with Tiffany) wakes up with amnesia in the middle of the Millennium Bridge in London during a rainstorm with 6 dead bodies surrounding her. What's the first thing you would do in this situation?

Myfanwy finds a note to herself and does what her previous self says to do─run.

The STARZ original follows the book by Daniel O'Malley but the TV show has gone a tad more serious route than the books. Daniel O'Malley's cheekyness is a little lost in translation.

I know a lot of big wigs have poo-poo'd this series (like Rotten Tomatoes) saying the dour tone and convoluted machinations overshadow its intriguing premise. But I do wonder if Stephanie Meyers (yeah, that Stephanie Meyers of Twilight) directing (or apparently being involved and then tapping out as the filming began) has anything to do with it.

Maybe they just have it in their heads that it's going to be bad. Maybe they were expecting it to be just like the Daniel O'Malley's book. Maybe they wanted purple slime. Whose to say.

What I do know is that when you go in with expectations it has a larger than a mountain potential to ruin the experience.

Main Characters

Picture
Awaken the Power Within

Protagonist

Myfanwy Thomas

Myfanwy (Mi-fan-ee) is an important member of Britain's last truly secret service, the Checquy.

In the first episode, she wakes at the base of the Millennium Bridge, surrounded by dead bodies and has a void in her memory.

The first season answers the questions swirling around her past, her mysterious power, and the events leading up to the night her memory was erased.

As a recovering OCD sufferer, I identify with Myfanwy (rhymes with Tiffany) and her "other" self's neurotic personality. As she enters the fray, I admire her tenacious resolve for finding answers.

Suspects and Allies

Linda Farrier

Myfanwy's mentor and ally (or is she?).

As the head of the Checquy, designated "King", Farrier must defend her tenuous hold on the agency's secrecy and many secrets of her own.

Farrier is a no-nonsense leader that seems to genuinely care for Myfanwy. I like her─but I don't trust her. Her true motivations are yet to be revealed. But I will watch this series and figure them out!

Though she's a strong leader, I fear she may not know what all is going on in her department. She has yet to show any type of special powers, but they may just be too subtle to notice.
Picture

Conrad Grantchester

Suave and charismatic "Queen" within the Checquy. Deputy to Farrier, he challenges her role as King ans he unravels the mystery surrounding Myfanwy Thomas.

Within the first episode you understand that Conrad will use his powers to get what he wants. Yet, through his moral corruption, he too seems to genuinely care for Myfanwy. He even went out of his way to threaten people on her behalf─without telling the "King" and without letting Myfanwy know either.

Right away I started thinking of theories as to why he would nearly kill a person with his special talent to prevent Myfanwy from being harmed.
Picture

Monica Reed

Monica is from the U.S. Bureau of Variant Affairs (the American agency that mirrors the Checquy). Upon hearing the mysterious incident at Millennium Bridge, she arrives in London to investigate the death of one of the victims which is also her former lover.

Monica is treated as an outcast in the U.K. Bureau and probably not because she came in search of her lover on her own personal time. These two power houses seem to play their cards close to the chest.

One thing seems clear to me by the end of episode 2─people want those with a certain talent that Myfanwy have and are selling these people as slaves on the black market.
Picture

Alex, Teddy, Eliza, and Robert Gestalt

Gestalt is the "hive mind"─four siblings sharing one consciousness. Thus why I've grouped them as one below.

Alex and Teddy (identical twins), Eliza and Robert appear to be individuals, each with distinctive manners and tastes in dress but this distinction is a facade to enhance their value as agents. They are, in fact, one person, silently sharing every thought.

Their oneness is fascinating and creepy and the actors play it so well! I look forward to their interactions especially with Myfanwy. *SPOILER ALERT* Talk about a moresome!

My Review

The premise is intriquing and the mystery is there to be unfolded TO you. I realize it's hard to put the inner editor away, but if you can, you will have an enjoyable time.

While I can't help but try to figure out what's going on, the events of Myfawny's "past life" comes creeping back while she tries to put things in place and find simple questions like─who's trying to kill her, much less, why?

This is the type of story I love to noodle on. Unraveling the mystery is fun from the couch.

I found the show keeping my interest to where I'll follow this season till it's end because STARZ has "promised" we get to find out.

From here I go into spoilers.

I spoke about Conrad and his protection of Myfawny. His actions seem more protective while Farrier seems like she's an ally, she may have ulterior motives for her Rook. Conrad doesn't tell Farrier about a certain encounter which makes me wonder if he's going to make a power play for the King seat. Monica seems very invested in the death of her former lover and seems to be sticking around for revenge. But everyone keeps a cool head.

Except for Teddy Gestalt. Teddy is getting angry over the fact that Myfawny is not broken hearted and fighting for him─them─to further their relationship. Plus Myfawny is acting weird. Of course she is─she's no longer who she used to be. She's forgotten all the experiences that made her. In my mind the Gestalt's appear to be different emotions of the same person.

Update

8/28/2019

Season 1 has concluded and the very last episode wraps everything up and comes full circle to the Millenium Bridge. However, the pace that was set during the rest of the season makes the ending feel a little abrupt.

We're left with more questions for Season 2─which is great! I want another season─but the "finality" of the season's end felt rushed. It makes sense and yet I have a niggling of dissatisfaction.

I'll ponder and think upon what it is about the ending that has me feeling this way, and if I reach a conclusion, I'll post an update! Or if you agree and have "put your finger on it", tell me in the comments! I'd appreciate someone to noodle about it.
