Who is Penn Scripter?

11/5/2020

I have spoken of Penn Scripter before and here is where I reveal all!

To answer the question, WHO IS PENN SSCRIPTER?

The short of it is simply Penn Scripter is the mother-daughter writing team of unexpected paranormal romance.
Picture

Here's the Long of it

Penn Scripter is the nom de plume for the writing team of S.N. and Carol McKibben. This mother-daughter combo writes unexpected paranormal romance. Separately, they each have a healthy list of novels.

S.N. McKibben dirty stories revolving around social taboos, none of which is for the weak of heart. Some of the material is adult, strong language and opinions, and, yes, sex. Among her titles you’ll find: Cougar Bait in the Coffee Shop; The Demon Inside Me; Dr. Vampyre; The Spoils of Allsveil; and Escape to Vampire Dam.

Carol McKibben is known as “the author who writes from a dog’s eyes.” Her love of animals, especially dogs and horses, is obvious in everything she writes. Unconditional love is the theme that runs through all her books, which to date have been narrated by dogs or wolves. Her books include award-winning Luke’s Tale – A Story of Unconditional Love; Snow Blood Seasons 1-5 - A Vampire Mystery Thriller Series; Moon Blood Books 1-5 – The First Blood Son Series; and Kane – The First Blood Son Prequel, some of which may be surprising love stories.

The two authors have combined their talents and interests to produce unexpected paranormal romance that will include fantasy, mythology, paranormal, dogs and horses, relationships, unusual circumstances, and, of course, romance.

Current projects include a fantasy novel entitled, Triad, and a contemporary paranormal romance, The Transformation of Charlie.

INSIDE SCOOP!

Sometimes, things go wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that you have to discard the original. Carol's tried and true fans are going to look at this cover reveal and say... hey wait a minute, that's not quite the cover I voted for!

They'd be right.

See, after the voting commenced, the winner was awarded the prize, contracts were signed, money paid and files downloaded, we had a gorgeous cover!

The male model on the cover was almost perfect! The design itself was amazing. It was unusual. It was the new look and feel of the latest series.

Then 99Designs came back and said...

Hold up! We have a problem.

See, our designer used a photo of a person in which the fine print stated that human models had to be unrecognizable if they were to be used for commercial purposes. Umm... I guess the consensus at 99Designs was of the mind that the model was too recognizable.

Whoops! Whoopsie!

But we'd seen what this designer could do. Andrei Bat is amazing. He made the cover better than ever!

A Destitute Duke

The Heirs & Spares (Book Two)
Patricia A. Knight

Blurb

Captain Duncan Worthington Everleigh had committed his life to king and country.

When he returns to London in 1814, a startling revelation about the legitimacy of his brother the Duke alters his future.

No discovery could be more life-changing than what he feels for Lady Florence Lloyd-Smith. To protect her, no sacrifice is too great, even if it costs him her love.

Too headstrong, independent, and beautiful for her own good, the widow Lady Lloyd-Smith isn’t the carefree lady of leisure she pretends to be. She has pulled herself from bitter poverty and through careful investment has amassed a substantial fortune. She has little time for men who treat all women as bubble-headed nodcocks or consider her tarnished because she’s in trade. She has little need for men at all, until she meets Captain Everleigh. The violence of her love for him leaves her trembling.

Captain Duncan finds in Lady Florence a woman he can love with unchecked passion. Lady Florence finds in Captain Duncan a man who will love, honor, and protect her, even if it’s from himself.

My Review

Strong women in a Regency Romance? The hell you say! But, yes please!

Florence is an unconventional widow living in a man's world with a head for business but no backing to expand into an opportunity overseas, becoming stuck in mediocrity. Ahhhh... a socialite's life problems.

Duncan figures he's a military man for life, until a family scandal reveals him as the heir to the Everleigh estate.

These two destined to be together meet when Florence feints into the arms of Duncan due to the injuries of his military companion. Duncan is immediately disgusted by the delicate waif.

And so the enemies to lovers begin!

If you are like me, and are captivated by learning new words and want to know the meaning of Regency slang and terms, bring your old dictionary and be prepared to learn! Or at least flip to the back of the book to the index. I'd buy the print specifically for this because I went back and forth, giddy at the latest insults I can fling at the Renaissance Faire (trust me, only the carnies that work there will know the History of these words).

However, if you are not a word sleuth never fear! Patricia's style of writing makes it easy to go with the flow. You will not need a dictionary because you will understand the meaning by her word placement.

Like the first book, this is another well researched masterpiece.

Charming, true to the Regency times and it's different type of lifestyle. Women had different problems then.

Strong characters carry this love story with laughter, tears and a happy ending! Be prepared for a ride that keeps you wanting more.

“Oh! Are you a spy?” Vivid blue eyes met his, and the slight woman in his arms shifted. “I am quite recovered. Please put me down.”

Duncan set his burden on her feet and stepped back to put the length of an arm between them. “Captain Duncan Everleigh, 12th Light Dragoons,” he said in a clipped voice.

“Lady Florence Lloyd-Smith.” The dark-headed beauty dipped into a slight curtsy. “So…are you a spy?” She studied him with open, lively curiosity as the men resumed their brisk walk down the manor’s carriageway—and she trotted beside them to keep up.

He frowned. “I would be a very poor one should I confess it.”

She gave a moue of disappointment. “Pity. Except for Lord Miles, who belongs to Eleanor, every gentleman I know is commonplace. Had you been a spy, it should have injected a moment of intrigue into my ordinary life, and I might have been tempted to further your acquaintance, perhaps so far as to allow you to call upon me in London.” Her voice became breathless and forced. “It should have enlivened the daily routine.” Her audible breathing came in rapid pants.

At his side, his half-brother laughed softly and offered a mild reproach. “I beg pardon, Lady Florence, but with all due respect, might I observe that the life you declare commonplace others would deem adventuresome in the extreme.”

“Fiddlesticks…I—”

Their conversation went uncomprehended. Her astoundingly arrogant assertion that she might “allow him” to call upon her, staggered him such that he might as well have been deaf to any further dialogue.

“You might have been tempted to further my acquaintance!” Duncan broke in with a loud snort and walked a little faster. By God, who did she think she was to infer he couldn’t fix her interest—if he chose to. Women routinely made themselves nuisances over him. He had to drive them away. He could hold her attentions—if he cared to. He didn’t. At the moment he had two priorities—Major Leeland Abernathy and the War Office. “But should I have welcomed yours? If you routinely engage in fainting spells in the midst of a carriageway, drawing attention away from a man who lies in sore need of medical care, you must be a vexatious and cumbersome female. Such hen-witted behavior would put off even the most sympathetic host or hostess and cannot be a character recommendation to any gentleman.” Duncan received an annoyed sideways glance as she picked up her skirts higher and increased her trot to almost a run as she scurried to keep up with the long, brisk strides of the gentlemen.

“My actions today were an exception. I am not the fainting type, which you would know if you knew anything about me, at all…which you don’t. Such quick, ill-informed judgment of another’s nature does not reflect well on yours, sir.” She inhaled in large draws to catch her breath as Duncan quickened his step yet again. “Regardless, I will make allowances for your rude behavior as you are probably distressed for your friend. Now…” She paused her speech for several gasping breaths as she exerted herself to keep up. “You side-stepped my question. Are you a spy?”

Well…he wasn’t about to address that subject with her. Duncan caught the attention of Miles, not hard to do as his brother observed the hostile exchange of words between Lady Florence and him with lively interest and an expression that suggested their discourse provided him high entertainment. “Is there someone who can go for a surgeon?”

“Yes, I’ll send a rider straightaway.”

He and Miles, with the bent over and gasping, but mercifully silent, Lady Florence Lloyd-Smith—there was a God in heaven—reached the forecourt of the manor house. A party of laborers and the property steward, a man introduced to Duncan as Mr. Welborn, greeted them. Lord Miles issued a number of quiet, concise orders and shortly a rider left at a gallop to fetch the surgeon while four men trotted down the carriageway with a door taken from the carriage house. A groom took the reins of Major Abernathy’s grey and his bay from Lord Miles and led the two horses to the stables.

Duncan clasped his half-brother on the shoulder. “Thank you. I greatly appreciate the calm dispatch with which you have dealt with what must be an upsetting development. It cannot be every day a man lies bleeding in the middle of your drive.”

Lord Miles shrugged off his thanks with a half-smile. “Add the unforeseen appearance of a brother I had feared dead and some unanticipated news my wife imparted to me earlier this morning,” he smiled broadly, “I’m to be a father... and yes, I’ll confess this day has been…out of the ordinary way.” Miles shook his head as if to clear his thoughts. “We will do our best for Major Abernathy… My memory didn’t deceive me, that is Major Leeland Abernathy?”
Duncan nodded. “Yes. It is important that I get to the War Office as soon as may be possible, but I don’t wish to leave Leeland until I know he is out of harm’s way. Oh, and all felicitations, on your good news.” Duncan smiled. “It really is good to see you, Miles.”

“Ah… thank you… I think between the Dowager Duchess, Lady Miles and Dr. Hickum—he’s the surgeon—Major Abernathy will have as good a chance as any man at a full recovery.”

Duncan opened his mouth to thank his half-brother yet again, but he was forestalled by a haughty female sniff.

“Though no one has inquired, my person is much recovered. I must change my gown. I fear it is badly soiled. After which, I am going to the dining room to finish my coffee. If anyone needs me, though I can’t imagine why anyone should as Eleanor and Her Grace have things well in hand, I can be found there.” Lady Florence bestowed a winsome smile on Lord Miles. With a curt nod of the head at Duncan, she turned smartly, and, there was no other way to describe it, glided off, head held high, with a decided sway to her hips.
Lord Miles followed Lady Florence’s departure with a quizzical look. “I can’t imagine what…” He shook his head. “I’ve never seen Lady Florence in such ill-humor. She is normally most pleasantly disposed.”

In spite of his irritation with the woman, Duncan’s eyes were drawn to the curvaceous body undulating beneath the sheer white muslin garments Lady Florence wore, now blown by the wind into hugging every swell of generous breast, tiny waist, and round buttock, of shapely thigh and trimly turned calf. “I’ve been too long without female company if I’m attracted to that mettlesome bit,” he muttered and turned toward the carriage drive to observe the progress of the four men who now carried the major toward the manor house, accompanied by Her Grace and Miles’ wife.

Author Bio

A very important moment for her was giving a reader closure after surviving domestic abuse. It was after reading her Romance/Thriller, Flame, about a domestic abuse survivor, who sent her a thank you message and she’s never forgotten it. “If it means I have helped one person, then I’m blessed.”

Writing has been Toya’s passion since a very early age. Sadly, it wasn’t until the death of her mum, who was also her best friend, in 2009 that she started to take it seriously. Her mother’s wish was to see her published, which didn’t occur until 2014. And now, each book she publishes is dedicated to her.

Always a shy person, becoming an author has helped to broaden her horizons and grow in confidence. Toya still laughs when she reflects on her dislike of social media. One by one, she began to use different platforms and is now very active on FB, Twitter and Instagram – not forgetting her brand new website. Now she is quite vocal about how important these platforms are for networking, an huge aspect of an indie author’s life. If not for social media, she would never have connected with two of her three publishers.

Social media to her is a wonderful way to connect with fellow authors and readers. So many friends have been made by her in this way, she loves nothing more than helping others. It still amazes her how wonderful and supportive the indie author community is. Everyone, without exception, is always willing to give others a hand. She always says she may not be an expert but is always willing to share anything she does know.

Whilst attending a workshop many years ago she learned a very valuable lesson from another author. He said, “Write because you love to write. If you’re doing it for the money, you may as well forget it now.” This is so true and is her mantra.

It still amazes her how much she’s grown when it comes to “putting herself out there”. She loves to read live from her work when she partakes in numerous FB takeover events. She’s given talks about her writing journey to Women’s Institute groups, and one at the assisted living facility where she works. She also enjoys open mic events. These still fill her with nerves, but that’s normal. And starting this year, she is about to embark on several big author signings, which she’s very excited about. Finally getting to meet so many people she’s connected with via social media.

Apart from working on her Destination Contemporary Romance series, she’s currently planning a Paranormal Romance series called Nature’s Warriors. A series of fantasy romances, notes in books at present, which she’s very excited about. And as if that isn’t enough to keep her occupied, she’s attempting to push herself even further. Toya’s written a standalone Rock Star Romance, which she is attempting to self-publish. This is to prove to herself she can push her boundaries, even though it terrifies her. Always happy to learn new skills and take advice from others is helping her to grow as an author, and person.

When not writing, or reading her main hobbies are; cinema, theatre, gardening, keeping fit, travelling, watching live bands, Formula One racing, watching darts and spending time with friends. She lives in Suffolk, UK with her husband, grown up son and Masai the cat.

Faith took a deep breath and stared at her phone for long moments. This was going to be one of the most difficult calls of her life. She dialled the number and waited for a response.

“Hi, it’s me.”

“Nice of you to call me, Faith, where have you been?”

The sarcasm in his tone irritated her, she glanced at the clock and shook her head. “We only spoke a short while ago.”

“That’s too long. You should want to speak to me all the time.”

“My editor called…”

He cut her off in mid flow. “Oh, I get it. Now your books are doing well you think you don’t need me.”

“Alan, please…”

“No, Faith, now you listen to me…”

Not anymore she wouldn’t. The time had come to tell him how she felt, she steadied herself.

“Sorry, Alan, I can’t do this any longer.”

“What do you mean? Have you finally realised you can’t write? It’s about time you saw sense.”

“No, Alan, we’re finished.” Faith jostled the phone to her other ear.

“What the hell do you mean by that? Why?”

Faith sighed and closed her eyes. “You know why.”

“Oh, please enlighten me!”

“You’ve never once supported my dream to be a published author.”

“Yes I damn well have.”

“Don’t lie,” she responded with frustration. “You’re only interested now because I’ve been signed.”

“That’s not true and you know it. Marry me, Faith, you need me.”

She gasped with surprise at his response. “I don’t need you and I’m certainly not marrying you.”

“Who the hell do you think is going to pick up the pieces when your book deal turns to crap, huh?”

“Just stop it. I can look after myself.”

“Yeah, sure you can. Where the hell will you get the money to support yourself, answer me that?”

She ran a hand across her forehead.

“Deny it all you want, but you can’t cope without me.”

She gritted her teeth. “You’ve proved how shallow you are. We are over. End of story.”

“This is crazy, listen to me.”

“No, Alan, not anymore. I’ll leave your stuff on the porch. I want it gone as soon as possible.”

“Faith…”

She ended the call before she heard anymore and threw her mobile phone on the sofa with exasperation. When the phone rang again, she picked it up, cancelled the call and blocked his number.

Faith walked into the kitchen, grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and drank deeply. She ambled back into the living room, flopped onto a chair and closed her eyes, rubbing the cold bottle along her forehead. Now she’d made the dreaded phone call, she needed some company. Picking up her mobile once more, she rang Leah, her best friend.

“Hey, Leah, it’s me. I’ve told Alan it’s over.”

Leah asked her loads of questions about her conversation with Alan.

“Yes, I’ve blocked his number. No, he can’t get in here. I had the foresight to change the locks before I called him. I’ve also packed up all his stuff and left it on the front porch for him to collect.”

She held the phone away from her ear while Leah hooted and cheered loudly.
“What I need right now though, is some time with my best friend. Can I stay at yours tonight? I don’t want to be here when Alan comes to retrieve his things. He’ll only start with the begging and pleading routine and I really don’t want to see him or hear his whiny voice.”

“Come whenever you’re ready, honey,” Leah responded.

“Great. I’ll be there just as soon as I’ve chucked some things in my bag.”

Inside Scoop

Carol is working on book three now and is almost finished. I hear of talks to combine books three and four because they are that closely related. But knowing the author... once the series really gets going cliff hangers are the norm. There will be five books in this series then we might see another character take over in a new series. But we can be sure it all will be written by the perspective of a dog.

My Review

Picture
Marked for death.

Levity and humor go hand in hand in MB2 (Moon Blood 2). It's the kind of story that gets under your skin and has you believing dogs can talk, vampires can have souls (but not in a sparkly kind of way) and unconditional love is alive and well in the world.

A new character, Zandra, is introduced. She's bold, brave and little bit arrogant─a perfect match for Kane. I can see them having many more adventures in more books of the series.

Moon, our canine narrator, has cat like responses towards the pairing such as "hacking up a fur ball". But I think Moon will get her just desserts when it comes time for her to find a mate.

Gory is prevalent for those who like that kind of story. But something interesting happenes during the battles in this installment as opposed to the Snow Blood series.

***SPOILER ALERT***

If you haven't read the SNOW BLOOD series and want to, this section may be a little bit of a spoiler. Skip down to the I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO FANS OF section and continue.
Or read the SNOW BLOOD series which I highly recommend.
Go on...
scroll down to the next section.

Still here? Great. Carrying on...

For instance, in MB2 the fighting is very different from the SB (Snow Blood) series. Since Kane took over the coven the abilities of all the vampires lean towards Kane's abilities. I noticed more shape-shifting in this one. More dragons. More bats. Just as much blood and slightly different tactics because Kane is much different from Brogio. Kane is the thinker.
Picture
Okay maybe not that kind of thinker
but definitely this kind of thinker...
Picture
James, Kane's valet, would make the most bad-ass vampire. He's in there in the fight with Moon and Kane for most of the fighting and yes, he's human.

In the end, Moon Blood 2 leaves us with no cliff hangers but has room for more stories. I can't wait!

Author Bio

Carol's love of animals, especially dogs and horses, is obvious in everything she writes. When Carol isn’t feeding her horde of canine rescues, she’s out riding her beloved Friesian on the plains of Texas. Her love of animals leads her to write through a dog's eyes. Carol’s message is clear. "If a dog can love us unconditionally, why can't we do the same with each other?" And, her paranormal stories are often filled with characters that might be the most difficult to love.

Carol's writing career began at 14 years of age when she started telling her stories to Labrador Retrievers, Basset Hounds, and any stray that happened by. It wasn't long before people stopped to have a listen as well. Now, Carol writes for people and speaks to large audiences, dogs included.

Excerpt

While we sat watching the crowd at the bar, I noticed a female gazing seductively at my sire from a table across the patio. My hackles rose.

Kane took his glass of wine from the waitress and savored its aroma, twirling it in his hand.

I see her. Kane’s voice slid through my mind.

Two things struck me about the woman. She resembled Selene with black hair and golden-brown eyes. Her voluptuous body exuded sex. Her sensual mouth curved into a smile when her eyes met Kane’s.

Her large-necked sweater slid off one olive-skinned shoulder. A short black leather mini skirt and knee-high black suede boots completed her sultry appearance.

Kane, impeccably attired in a dark-blue Boglioli jacket, blue turtleneck, and Brunello Cucinelli jeans, dusted off his Bruno Magli boots. He picked up his expensive glass of wine and sauntered over to the woman’s table.

I padded over and around to the gate behind her table and growled at her. Sniffing the air, I took in her aroma. She smelled of forest.

Kane sat opposite her, and she glanced over her shoulder at me.

“Your companion does not trust my motives.” She turned and eyed my master.

“What are your motives?” He leaned his handsome face toward hers and gave her a smoldering, unmistakable look.

“Nothing nefarious. You are just the most attractive person here tonight. Can’t a girl dream?” She sipped her wine.

“You can do more than dream.” Kane reached across the table and took her hand. “I am Kane de Medici. What is your name?”

“I know who you are, Kane. Everyone knows the most eligible bachelor in Tuscany.”

“Well, now that we both know my name, perhaps you have one as well?” He smiled, and his dark-brown eyes squinted at the corners slightly.

“Zandra Moretti.”

“Have you lived here for very long, Zandra, or just passing through?” Kane let go of her hand.

“All my life. Tuscan born.”

“How have we never met?” Kane sipped his wine, noticed her glass was empty, and called to the waitress. “Another glass of what I’m having, please.”

“You are gone often. A world traveler, no?”

The waitress brought another glass and set it down in front of Zandra.

She took it and sipped it. “This is one of yours, no?”

“You appear to know more about me than I do about you. Why don’t we rectify that?”

I could hold my silence no longer. Be careful. She isn’t human.

Yes, I know that she isn’t what she pretends to be. If she was sent to trap me in some way, I need to let it play out.

Zandra sniffed the wine, tasted it, and then drained the glass.

“Good wine should be savored, not gulped.” Kane frowned at her.

She reached into her black purse, pulled out a small card, and slid it across the table at him. “I’m late for an appointment. Call me.” She rose from her chair slowly, letting Kane’s eyes feast on every curve. “I’m sure you’ll like me once you get to know me.” She strode away, and Kane’s eyes never left her as she disappeared.

My sharp bark jarred him back to reality.

She’s a shifter, but different than the others. I stood and paced around.
Kane finished his wine and responded. It will be fun discovering just exactly what she is.
