Meet the Cast Main Characters My Bride is a Mermaid Dating sim with a clear-cut theme other than how many girls the dude can attract--oh wait--never-mind :) Our heroes are a land-dweller named Nagasumi Michishio, a fifteen year old boy, visiting his grandmother in the coast AND Sun Seto the daughter of a mermaid gangster clan. After Sun saves Nagasumi from drowning and breaks mermaid law Sun's father and head of the Seto clan, Gozaburo, is ready to execute the boy. But Sun and her mother have another idea--for Nagasumi to marry Sun. That way the secret of mermaids are kept "in the family". Where "Honor among thieves" is actually "Honor under the seas" this fun, silly series explores the perils of falling in love with a mermaid! Nagasumi Obsticles include (but not limited to) an over protective father-in-law, Sun's entire mobster clan, being taken away from his precious Sun by another mermaid (named Lunar) that would have him as her manservant, Kai--a hopeful competitor for Sun's heart, Sun's bodyguard, Conch, Shark-the in-house Seto hit-shark, the Elite Seto Assassins, and Octipi. But there is one person in the Seto gang that actually likes Nagasumi and goes in for the dive to save him a few times. The super cool Masa-san. There is also Lunar's father that wants his daughter to be happy. He's more than willing to protect his daughter but also wants her happy. Luna's father is played as a replica of the terminator. But Lunar's papa loves his daughter to the point of making a fool of himself to understand her and why she'd want to marry a human. Lunar at first only wants to take Nagasumi away from Sun for vengeful purposes but Nagasumi shows strength, wisdom and guts when he refuses. One difference between this and the other dating sim anime is the girls have admirers too and not just a crowd of boys. Sun in particular has Kai, the wealthy merman that wants to claim Sun as his wife. Because there are a number of themes we get to see a few points of view. But one thing I really liked about this show was how two people chose to be devoted to each other and fell in love. Kai Mikawa battles with Nagasumi for Sun's heart. He is the heir to the Mikawa Corporation and tends to throw his money around. He has horrible agoraphobia, wearing a space suit while outside, only travels in submarines and turns into a killer whale when splashed with water. But, despite his seemingly shallowness he comes through when it counts. He was one of my favorites! Chimp is originally Nagasumi's friend who is a little obsessed with Sun but quickly changes allegiance to his friend when Kai throws his money around. I thought Chimp would be an annoying character but I found his honesty about "being on the side of power" and in the end--his loyalty to Kai very endearing. Some of the silliness that ensues are quick clips of much different style of artwork. Other times it's cross-dressing fathers trying to understand their daughters. Or sometimes it's when Nagasumi acts dreamy around Masa-san remembering it was the gangster merman that gave him his first "kiss" (Masa-san gave Nagasumi mouth-to-mouth resuscitation--twice). At the last episode, we get to see Nagasumi fight the ultimate fight for Sun and he becomes her perfect guy as seen through her eyes. Nagasumi's wisdom is only bolster by Sun's devotion to him--always giving him the benifit of the doubt but her love for Nagasumi is nothing short of the honor she bares for choosing to keep him alive and marrying him instead of having him subjected to mermaid law. I give this a 5 star because of the storyline, characters & the endearing love story between two people from different worlds making a lasting commitment blossom into full fledged love and devotion. And what's not to love about a sword-wielding, strong woman who chooses honor and love over tradition and fear. Comments are closed.
